Private armed vessels played an important role in this war. American privateers had a small navy, and while they built ships, there were not enough. They encountered great success on the great lakes because they were in control of them, and coastal colonies like Boston and New York were the main targets. America had some advantages: their vessels were smaller but faster, their privateers grew in number and ruthlessness, they carried 20 guns on one ship and captured 26 prizes.
