31 mai 1625 - 8. Indentured Servitude

Description:

Indentured Servitude was the prevailing labor system in the 17th- century colonial America. Poor Europeans seeking a new life would pay for their passage to America by working for an employer for 4 to 7 years. Indentured servants were needed for places like Jamestown in order to increase tobacco production. Indentured servants could be traded from one employer to the next. Indentured servants made up most of the population in the Chesapeake region accounting for 75% of the population from 1600 to 1670.
