He was an Italian explorer that made four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean at the behest of the Catholic Monarchy of Spain. He wanted to find a direct sea route from Europe to Asia. Instead of landing in Asia he landed in the Americas. He did not discover the Americas but his journeys led to centuries of colonization of the Americas by European powers.
