Indentured Servitude was a system of labor used on plantations in the Americas. Differing from the Encomienda or the African slave trade, indentured servitude was made up of English citizens trading their labor for a voyage to the Americas. The indentured servants were low class citizens that worked for employers and could be sold from one landowner to another. Many colonists in the Chesapeake region during the 1600s were indentured servants.
