Between 1840 and 1860, there was a large wave of over 4 million immigrants collectively, coming from Ireland, Germany, and Britain. Many Irish immigrants moved to big, coastal cities. Because of the new immigrants, the US population dramatically increased. Many of the immigrants fled their past lives with hope that America would be a place to start over. For some of them it was, but on the contrary, many Irish immigrants faced discrimination.
