28 janv. 1840 - Nativism

Description:

*The Louisiana purchase provided more land for immigrants to move and colonize*. Between the 1840s and 1860s, there was a large influx of immigrants from Germany, Ireland, and other areas in Europe. The “natives” of the United States did not want the new immigrants to bring their Catholic and “foreign” influence of their beliefs. The Nativists created anti-immigrant artwork and propaganda to shun the new peoples. This movement was ironic because all of the “natives” were immigrants at one point. This movement led to James Monroe’s presidency and the Era of Good Feelings. Key Concept 4.1.III
