28 janv. 1800 - Thomas Jefferson

Description:

*After opposing the Federalist president, Washington, and the vision of Alexander Hamilton*, Thomas Jefferson became the first Democratic-Republican president. He wanted a small federal government and had an agrarian vision. Jefferson wanted to be a small isolated nation of farmers. Although he was against Hamilton’s financial plan, he kept the system except for the excise taxes. Jefferson balanced the national budget and reduced the debt in his presidency. Jefferson made big steps to stay out of foreign affairs, and he reduced the national army. Later in his second term as president, Jefferson carried out the Embargo of 1807 which was supposed to prevent war with England, but instead hurt the nation’s economy. Key Concept 3.2.III
