King Henri III was a politique: a moderate who wants religious reconciliation more than anything and a strong, tolerant monarchy. He besieged Paris, but was assassinated by a monk in 1589. King Henry of Navarre (King Henry IV) succeeded him. He was a Huguenot politique, but prudently converted to Catholicism after years on stalemate. ‘ Paris is worth a mass.’ He was now able to issue the Edict of Nantes, which gave religious tolerance to 150 Huguenot towns, expanding on the Peace of Augsburg.
