-In the 1800s was the most common cause of death following childbirth
-Caused by bacteria: Streptococcus pyogenes-
-First identified in 1879
-5 to 20 percent of women giving birth in hospitals would die of puerperal fever
-In some outbreaks at hospitals would kill as many as 70-100 percent of the women giving birth
-Still a major cause of maternal mortality in resource poor areas
