The first evidence of Smallpox was in 1157 BC from the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses V. It was thought to be that the virus was "not alive" and it required a host cell to replicate, divide, and grow. It would attach to a victim, take over the system, make new viral particles, and then release them. The incubation period was 7-10 days. At day 12, the victim would enter the toxic phase with a rash and high fever. At this point they would become highly infectious and begin to virally shed from lesions. Symptoms included fever, flu-like symptoms, slow development of rash that occurs in stages, bumps would begin to show up all over the body (especially the legs and arms), and they then would fill with pus and scab over. The fatality rate was around 10% but can be higher. There is no treatment but there is supportive care.
