This system highlighted the brutality of the Conquistadors. The encomienda system was created to convert Native Americans into Christians with a highly developed faith in the Catholic church. This system soon developed into a slavery system where Spanish Conquistadors were extremely brutal towards the Native Americans that they were “converting.” The Spanish Monarch “gave” Conquistadors an area of land and “people” to convert. This act of giving land continues throughout American history and eventually leads to many Native American tribes rebelling and losing much of their land that they lived in long before explorers.
