was the first satellite launched into space by the USA. also was the first satellite to have an on-board telemetry system. the satellite was designed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and weighed 30.8 pounds was launched using a Jupiter C rocket that was developed by Dr. Wernher von Braun.
