Description:

During the Thermidorian Reaction, the National Convention decided to create a new assembly with a five-man executive known as the Directory. The Directory would support wars with other nations as a means of economic stability. The Directory would prove to be unpopular, and in 1797 the Directory nullified elections (which had elected conservatives and monarchists who asked for peace) and governed dictatorially.
