Description:

The Bastille was a royal fortress used as a prison, guarded by 30 Swiss mercenaries and 80 retired soldiers. A mob stormed the prison in order to get the gunpowder and munitions stored inside for the "defense of Paris". Despite a desperate defense, the governor of the prison was hacked to death and had his head paraded around the streets.
