1 oct. 1949 - Chinese Revolution of 1949
Description:
At the end of the civil war between the rival KMT and CCP, Mao Zedong, leader of the CCP, declared victory over Chiang Kai-shek's KMT and the formation of the People's Republic of China. The civil war began right after WWII, but conflicts before then had existed since the formation of the CCP. The U.S. supported the KMT as the only option to prevent communist spread in China and tried to support an agreement between the CCP and KMT, but talks quickly broke down in 1946 and a civil war began. When Mao Zedong won in 1949, Chiang Kai-shek and his forces fled to Taiwan, which had been taken back from Japan after WWII.
