The Chinese bronze age began by 1700 BCE, under the kingdom of the Shang Dynasty. The techniques used by Shang and the Zhou dynasties is unique to China and different from the methods of western Asia and Europe. The Bronze Age was important to the Shang religious ceremonies. The number of artifacts of and oracle bones found at the grave sites of elites and at the remains of royal palaces has clarified the belief system of the rulers.
