7 juin 1494 - Treaty of Tordesillas

Description:

A land treaty between Spain and Portugal. They drew a meridian 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde Islands, roughly halfway between them and the islands explored by Christopher Columbus (solid red line in the image). It was decreed that Spain could claim any land west of the line, while Portugal had the rights to anything to the line's east. However, no other country was mentioned in the treaty, leaving other nations to effectively ignore it. Portugal started moving west in Brazil, past the meridian. While the Spanish made no move to stop them there, they became concerned when their rival started to take over India. Spain claimed that the meridian actually ran all the way around Earth, something not mentioned by the treaty.
