Diamond began laboratory work at Harvard as an undergrad however he explicitly states that he only ever took minimal science courses. Instead he took musical composition, German, Russian, epic poetry, and a class on the american revolution. Although these did not relate to his career choice at the time, in his senior year he made the life altering decision to get a Ph. D. instead of going to medical school- in part because of the extra classes he took.
