While sanitation practices and toilets of a kind had been in use since ancient times to deal with waste, it is at this point that the design for what would be the modern toilet was first seen and would lead to Alexander Cummings in 1775 being granted a patent for the s pipe that would help make the toilet capable of keeping smells and bacteria out as much as possible.
