What: A society which attempted to persuade drinkers to pledge abstinence. The society led to the development of Washingtonians in 1840, a group of recovering alcoholics, who argued alcoholism was a disease. More temperance societies formed following the initial development of the American Temperance Society. The further development of temperance societies was supported by factory owners and politicians as they saw the economic benefits of temperance, such as reduced crime, less poverty, and improved work ethic.
