Who: Nat Turner - a Virginia Slave
What: A revolt led by the Virginia slave Nat Turner in which 55 whites were killed. The rebellion was one of the only effective, sustained slave-led rebellions. The revolt was put down by by the murder of hundreds of African Americans. Following the revolt, the movement and congregation of slaves was limited and pro-slavery and anti-abolition increased; however, the revolt proved the discontent of the slaves and helped represent the African-American abolitionist group.
