The goal of the Indian Act was to assimilate the Indians, meaning that they would give up their own culture, languages, and beliefs, and live and act just like the British settlers.

The first natives people had no intention of giving up their identity, so it made the process harder. Leading to the creation of the Indian Act. The act was also to protect the land that they had let the natives live on.
