here was a big project to drain the swamps in the area south of Aleppo, to transform them into arable land. I took many photos of all aspects of this project. When I returned to Baghdad, I developed the images and everything came out blank. I was horrified. The manager asked me to go back and reshoot. He also added, “In Aleppo, please say hello to your friend, the girl working at the hotel there.” I was surprised they knew about her. I had been there on my own.
