Abstract: Animation seemingly draws most directly upon the commercial appeal of the motion picture as a mass medium. In the following article, Tom Hoffer, associate professor and acting chairman of Mass Communications at the University of West Florida, re-evaluates the efforts and contributions of cartoonist Winsor McCay. The seeming paradox of commercialism vs. art is not resolved by McCay's on-again, off-again flirtation with motion pictures. While McCay's contributions and motivations may be debated, the fact that his entrepreneurial methods set the standards for the future cannot be denied.
A version of this article was presented at the annual University Film Association conference, August 1975, in Rochester, New York.
