2 févr. 632 - Muhammad's death. (632 C.E.) Sunnies vs. Shiites

Description:

- This division in Islam originated after the death of Muhammad, the founder of Islam. The division was created because of the conflict Muslims had about who should be the next prophet. Sunnis, that means ”one who follows the traditions of the Prophet”, believed that the next prophet had to be chosen by the Islamic community’s people. Since the great majority of Muslims were Sunnis, Abu Bark’s, even though not being descendant from Muhammad, was chosen as the prophet. Abu Bark’s was Muhammad’s trusted advisor. On the other hand, the Shiites, that means “the Party of Ali”, believed that the Muslim who had the right to take the charge of Muslim Prophet was the descendant of Muhammad. After the death of Muhammad, they believed that Ali, cousin, and son-in-law of Muhammad, should take the charge as the prophet.

Differences:
- Shiites had their own Imams, which were the real successor of Muhammad. Believed in 12 Imams.
- Sunnis’ Imams were Muslim leaders.
- Sunnis emphasize God’s power in the material world, sometimes including the public and political realm, while Shiites value martyrdom and sacrifice.

Similarities:
- Believed that Muhammad was the only prophet.
- There is only one true God.
- The Five Pillars:
Sawm - fasting during Ramadan.
Hajj – a pilgrimage to Mecca
Shahada – a declaration of faith
Salat- Muslims are required to pray 5 times a day.
Zakat – the giving of charity to the poor.
