Description:
Ottoman Empire was started as a Turkish tribe in Asian Minor (Anatolia). Under the leadership of Osman I, they continued expanding over southeastern Europe, the Middle East, and at its peak, some of Africa. On May 29, 1453, Byzantine Empire was attacked by Ottoman army. Ottoman Empire was commanded by Sultan Mehmed II, who was 21 years old. He defeated Emperor Constantine XI, and after 53 long sieges, conquered the city of Constantinople. The capital of the Ottoman Empire was transferred to Constantinople. This capture of Constantinople ended the Byzantine Empire, which lasted for almost 1500 years. Constantinople was renamed into Istanbul. Hagia Sophia was turned into Mosque. When Constantinople fell, many scholars and artists fled to Italy. This helped spread the Renaissance movement in Italy.
