Description:
In this chapter we see that the boys open themselves to tell their testimonies as victims of war, each one being as devastating as all the others, very sad testimonies. The testimonies were the following:
Musa: He was at home with his father and his mother at the market. When the attack started, he and his father went to the market and found his mother and escaped, but she was left behind. His father left Musa to look for his wife, and he was alone ever since.
Alhaji: He was fetching water when the attack happened, and he ran home just to find out his family was killed.
Kanei: He escaped with his parents and got on a boat to cross Jong river, but when they were getting down, rebels started shooting. He managed to swim to the other side and save himself.
Jumah: He and Moriba lived next to each other, but their houses were destroyed. They went to the wharf to find their families, as they were traders, but they couldn't.
Moriba: Same as Jumah.
Saidu: His family was not able to leave town, so they hid on their house. One day, when was in the attic getting a bag of rice to eat, rebels crashed their house, rapped his sisters, took them and killed his parents.
Also, we see the explanation of the moon from the first chapter, this explanation was that you got to be like the moon and strive. In this chapter, Ishmael felt like the moon was following them, as it wished to accomplish the same as him and the boys did, find a safe place.
#1 event in the novel: We say that this is the most important event of the whole novel, up till now because this is where we really see how the war can affect really hard a person, especially boys like the characters in the book. When we read this testimony, we felt the sadness of the boys, also, it's really hard to understand what they were going through, or what they had been. It's also really unfair to know that they suffered by doing nothing.
