1 janv. 1816 - Tariff of 1816
Description:
It’s function was to protect goods manufactured in the US from imported goods. Northern typically supported the tariff while Southerners opposed it.
Causes: America relied heavily on European goods and after the War of 1812 Britain dumped a bunch of goods onto the American market. New England manufacturers could not compete with inexpensive foreign goods. The tariff was seen as a way to help America become economically independent.
Historical Impact: It was the first of many protective tariffs to come. It also ignited the debate between high and low tariffs, which increased sectional tensions in the North and South.
