29 déc. 1845 - Annexation of Texas
Description:
Regardless of Whig efforts to limit territorial expansion because of fears it would spread slavery, Democratic president, James K. Polk, annexed the newly independent Republic of Texas. Since Texas practiced slavery it would be admitted as a slave state, but it would offset the balance of slave and free states in the U.S. Also the annexation would lead to an impending war with Mexico.
