Description:
Starting in the 1820s, the movement attempted to eliminate alcohol consumption.
Causes: With the excessive consumption of alcohol came along American families being unemployed, having physical violence, and other issues. Perceiving alcohol consumption to be a sin, and with the concepts of the Second Great Awakening, many Christian ministers started the Temperance Movement.
Impact: The movement achieved considerable success throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. Through temperance initiatives, both state and national legislatures began banning alcohol.
