16 oct. 1859 - Harper's Ferry raid
Description:
- Description: On the night of October 16, 1859, Brown and his band overran the federal arsenal. Some of his men rounded up a handful of hostages, including a few slaves. Word of the raid spread and by the following day Brown and his men were surrounded.
- Causes: John Brown's raids were caused by the rising tension along the nebraska-kansas border. Brown often times was thought as the man who started the civil war.
- Historical Impact: After the raid southerners initially lived in fear of slave uprisings and invasion by armed abolitionists. The South's reaction entered the second phase at around the time of Brown's execution. Southerners were relieved that no slaves had volunteered to help Brown.
