15 oct. 1763 - Proclamation of 1763

Description:

The king was worried about the high cost of the French and Indian War. So, he wanted contact between the Native Americans and the colonists to stop. He thought this would keep the peace. As you have read, a new law said that colonists had to stay east of a line along the Appalachian Mountains. This law was called the Proclamation of 1763.

Settlers in the western areas were angry about the proclamation. They felt the king was taking away their freedom to grow colonial territories westward. In fact, people did not stop. They still settled west of the line and went against the proclamation. The British government had heavy debts from the French and Indian War. It did not have enough money to send soldiers to make sure people followed the law.
