14 avr. 2017 - "PRIDE." released as an album cut on "DAMN."

Description:

Kendrick Lamar makes a reference to the Bible verses Matthew 6:19-21 within the first minute of the song. These verses say:

"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." (NIV)

Kendrick says in his own lyrics:

"Hell-raising, wheel-chasing, new worldly possessions." (Duckworth, 2017)

Kendrick is highlighting this Bible verse to warn us about the pride we derive from our possessions. His lyrics warn of "spirit-breaking" and of putting "faith in man."

Kendrick's final lyrical passage in the song then make this comment:

"See, in a perfect world, I'll choose faith over riches
I'll choose work over bitches, I'll make schools out of prison
I'll take all the religions and put 'em all in one service
Just to tell 'em we ain't shit, but He's been perfect, world" (Duckworth, 2017)

In the Bible, there are multiple instances of choices between faith or riches. One such example is the entirety of the book of Job. Satan tests God by asking if Job is really a Godly man or if he only worships God because of how tremendously blessed he is. After Job's possessions are taken away, he eventually proves his faith in God is still alive. Other parts of the Bible focus on the dangers of money as well and Jesus even talks about money more than anything else.

Kendrick's conclusion of God's perfection is again reflected in the Bible. Psalm 18:30 says

"This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him." (NIV)

Even though "we ain't shit" as Kendrick says in his song, we are loved by God and we can take refuge in him. His perfection can save us from our own imperfections. (Packer, 2011)
