22 mai 1856 - The Brooks-Sumner Affair May 22 1856, slavery and states' right issue

Description:

On May 19 Charles Sumner who was a Massachusetts senator hold a speech "The Crime Against Kansas". In speech he assaulted senator Andrew P. Butler of South Carolina. Butler's nephew Preston S. Brooks decised to defend his uncle and couple days from the speech he walked into senates chamber over to Sumner's desk. He had the walking cane and he started struck Sumner on the head repeatedly before the cane broke. Southerners gave their support to Brooks and northeners say that it was a example a Southern brutality.
