Description:

Preservationists dealt major scront (1913) when fed gov’t allowed San Francisco to build dam for municipal water supply in Hetch Hetchy Valley in Yosemite National party; To Sierra club, including naturalist John Muir, Hetch Hetchy = temple of nature ; Other conservationists like Gifford Pinchot thought that wilderness = waste; Pinchot & TR wanted to use nation’s natural resource intelligently; Had to fight against greedy commercial interests & romantic preservationists
