Description:

The largest continental earthquake in the United States in New Madrid, Missouri. Estimated to be around 8.0 on the Richter scale, the earthquake created new lakes, caused numerous aftershocks, and reversed the course of the Mississippi River, which wreaked havoc upon the city and environment. Due to all the damage, Missouri asked the federal government for assistance and aid, which consequently marked the first usage of disater relief.
