22 déc. 1807 - The Embargo Act

Description:

The Embargo Act prohibited the United States from trading with foreign countries. New England suffered because most of their economy was merchant-based and they relied heavily on foreign trade. Federalist views became more popular as people disapproved of the Embargo Act (made by Thomas Jefferson). Farmers who would usually support Republican policy were hurt by the Embargo Act as well, because they exported crops. People began smuggling goods through Canada.
