1 févr. 1847 - Wilmot Proviso Rejected
Description:
The Wilmot Proviso, a ban created by David Wilmot to prevent slavery in territories obtained through war, was passed in the House of Representatives in August of 1846 but failed to pass through the Senate. While it didn't pass, it helped to establish the idea in the south that the north was conspiring to cut off and eventually destroy slavery in America. It also made the north believe the south was working to force slavery upon the rest of the country. Strengthening the false ideas of conspiracy, the proviso's consideration in and of itself made tensions across the country worse, and it helped the snowball of growing animosity and distrust between the north and south that would lead to war.
