4 nov 1853 - The Election of 1856

Description:

The election was mainly between American Party-nominated Millard Fillmore, Democrat nominated, James Buchanan and Republican Nominee John C. Fremont. James Buchanan won the election. During this election the only national part was the Democratic Party and it was hanging on a thread. The American Party was splintering and the Republicans had replaced the Whigs. This election helped move the United States towards a Civil war because the elected President won the election mainly by electoral votes, but his popularity was 1.8 million for him vs the 2.1 million popular votes against him. In the divided nation, it was not a good combination.
