The earliest professional American "moving picture camerawomen" was Katherine Russell Bleecker, who began her work in 1913. She owned her own motion picture equipment, and, according to the Sunday New York Times Magazine (Nov 21 1915). was hired to document prison conditions in Sing Sing and other prisons, thus contributing to prison reform.
