24 févr. 1967 - Brian Paul Schmidt

Description:

Astronomer Brian Schmidt worked with Robert Kirshner — a well-known astronomer working at Harvard — where they identified and measured massive stars about 20 times the mass of the sun. They not only measured the distance of the objects but they also identified how fast they move away from earth and the expansion of our universe. They made the discovery that the universe is expanding as a whole. They were able to put it all together with the fact that the further away something is, the fainter it becomes, so that by observing one of these exploding stars we could figure out how far it was away from.
