The Board of Education was abolished in 1855, on the constitution of the existing educational department
The head of the education department under the British from the creation of the department in 1855 was known as Director of Public Instruction, whose job was to carry out the policy of Sir Charles Wood's ( later Lord Halifax) famous despatch of 1854.
