17 mars 1960 - Right to Safety at Work

Description:

After a tragedy resulting in five deaths of workers which could have been prevented, unions campaigned for the passing of the Industrial Safety Act. This tragedy was the tipping point for workers and employers alike to become aware of the need for safety at work.
Three rights came out of the union campaigns: the right to refuse unsafe work, the right to know about workplace hazards and prevention, and the right to participate in health and safety discussions. These rights are still at the core of worker health and safety today.
