On March 4th, 1881, James Garfield was sworn into office at the U.S. Capitol building in Washington D.C. Garfield scrapped his original inaugural address three days before his inauguration, and quickly threw together a new one. As a result, the speech delivered by Garfield didn't live up to some people's expectations. After being sworn in, Garfield proceeded to observe a parade with a march composed and conducted by famous 1800's musician John Sousa. Sousa would later conduct another march for Garfield's funeral after the president died that same year from a gunshot wound on September 9th.Ajouté au bande de temps:
