1 janv. 1960 - Marshall Nirenberg & Heinrich Matthaei

Description:

Nirenberg and Matthaei created a “cell-free environment” so that they could examine how RNA actually works. They selected E.coli to be their model for this study and created a synthetic RNA to be placed in this bacteria. They found that their synthetic RNA coded for phenylalanine to be added at the end of the polypeptide chain. Marshall and Heinrich concluded that uracil directed the formation of phenylalanine, UUU was the code for phenylalanine. Nirenberg and Matthaei then realized that this was messenger RNA, which transcribes the information given to it from DNA and is later used for the synthesis of proteins.
