Description:
This act was established by the British government as the first attempt to pay off the war debt from the seven-year war. The tax was on molasses and sugar and was the first direct taxt targeting the walelthy rum trade. To prevent smuggling, royal officials ran courts to hear smuggling cases witout a jury. This intrusion sparked outrage amongst the colonist.
