1 janv. 1729 - Hoopshirts

Description:

A series of hoops of different dimensions were attached to one another by ribbons or strings at intervals around their circumference. In about 1729, it became customary to cover this cage with cloth so that the hoop became a reinforced skirt. Its purpose, similar to the farthingale, was to give the dress a bigger shape. As the hoops starting becoming wider, they needed even more fabric to cover them. They even became wide enough so that two women couldn't walk a narrow street together or occupy a carriage in comfort.
