20 juin 1789 - Tennis Court Oath

Description:

Necker insisted Louis XVI call a meeting of the traditional representative body of the kingdom, the Estates-General. The Third Estate felt that it was unfair because the vote will usually be 2 against 1, which is the First and Second Estate against the Third Estate. Robespierre (represents the Third Estate) and his colleagues were demanding that the nobility and the clergy pay taxes but Louis feel threatened. On June 20th the deputies come to their meeting but find the doors locked, they suspect a plot. So they move to the tennis court and gather together and will not stop having a meeting until they have a new constitution. Started from that moment they called themselves 'The National Assembly'.
