20 janv. 1720 - Execution of Calico Jack Rackham

Description:

Jack takes over the English ship after Charles Vane becomes unpopular with his crew, due to their lack of plunder. They encountered a French war ship disguised and retreat against the wishes of the crew. The crew sails to Belize under the navigation of Jack, when a storm hits. They are recognized and brought to Port Royal where they are hanged at Gallows Point. Jack is not hanged and remains at large. He is called Calico Jack due to his smuggling of cloth and other goods. Calico is imported from India, and at the time England is trying to grow its own cotton industry, so this is highly illegal. He is a wanted man, eventually accepting a pardon in 1719 for several reasons: mainly England seems to be going to war with Spain gain, giving him opportunity to become a privateer.
