13 nov 1718 - Execution of Stede Bonnet, The Gentleman Pirate

Description:

Stede Bonnet was a well-educated elite who was former major in the colonial militia, and had a plantation in Barbados. He was not an outcast, but it is believed that his broken marriage of mental illness drove him to piracy. He spent time in New Providence and was pardoned, but still turned to piracy later. He was caught by the anti-pirate squadron and taken to Charleston to be tried. He was treated as an elite with a private home instead of jail which he escaped. He was captured in the river and was hung on November 13th, 1718.
